Striving to Achieve Our BEST!

Meet the Governors

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

We have also provided a Register of Governor Interests and an Annual Statement of Issues for your information.

The Governing Body of Awsworth Primary School work together on a voluntary basis to support and maintain the high expectations of the school.  We have three key strategic functions which are to:

  • Ensure the clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.
  • Hold the Head Teacher and staff to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
  • Oversee the effective financial performance of the school.

Each term governors attend a Full Governing Body Meeting in addition to a meeting of the Curriculum and Pupils Committee and the Resources Committee.  Other meetings also take place throughout the year which enable governors to focus in greater depth on specific areas such as assessment and performance data.  In order to gain a greater understanding of what happens within school every governor has one or more areas of the curriculum which they focus on and are linked with the member of staff who is the co-ordinator for their chosen area.  This has proved very beneficial in increasing the knowledge of all governors as feedback from individual visits is then shared with all governors at committee meetings. Governors also attend a wide range of events both inside and outside school and undertake training and self-evaluation to ensure we are effective in our role and can both support and challenge the school.

We are proud of the caring ethos and stimulating environment our pupils enjoy and will always work closely with the staff to do everything we can to ensure that all our pupils are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential and to enjoy their time at school.  We place great importance on the relationship parents/carers have with the school and value any suggestions and comments you would like to make.  We can always be contacted via the school office and will respond as quickly as we can.  You can also contact us on the school website on the ‘Information for Parents’ page where there is a link to give your comments.  This link is completely anonymous but we are happy to respond personally to your comments if you leave your contact details.

Mrs Marilyn Reed

Chair of the Governing Body

I’m married with three grown up children who all attended this school. I have enjoyed a career that has enabled me to experience both the early years of children’s development through to further and adult education which has been very rewarding.

I think it’s really important that children enjoy coming to school and feel happy, safe and valued as individuals and I’m proud of the reputation the school has within the community and that a third of families choose to bring their children here from outside the school catchment.  I will always do everything I can to ensure the school continues to strive for excellence in all it does and the children are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential and receive the highest quality of learning experiences.

Prof Frazer Pearce

Vice Chair of the Governing Body and Training Coordinator

I am a father of two boys, Mattie and Sam, the eldest of which is in year 2. I was born and educated locally until finishing my A-levels, when I went to Newcastle University.

Presently I teach physics at Nottingham University. As head of year two I play an active teaching and management role, including responsibility for 200 students, arranging courses and setting examinations. I also won a Lord Dearing Award for services to teaching and learning.

Mrs Karen Eardley

Chair of Resources Committee

I grew up in the village and having attended this school as a pupil it has always had a place in my heart.  When my youngest children started school I wanted to learn more about it and have been a parent governor for over six years.

During this time I have enjoyed learning how the school is run.  I understand the importance of being a critical friend, whilst challenging and gathering evidence to hold the school accountable for financial decisions and improving the provisions for teaching and learning.

Mrs Erika Owen

Chair of Curriculum and Pupils Committee

Hello my name is Erika, parent to George (4) and Tommy (3).  I’ve always wanted to belong to a community and now that Awsworth has become “home”, I’m so privileged to help support my local community and school.

With my “American upbringing” I have had many diverse experiences of adjusting to and fitting into numerous communities across the US.  Performing Arts and managing my own business in private music tuition have enabled me to be adaptable, inquisitive, collaborative, financially and organisationally efficient.  Analysing my own performance, as well as that of my students, it is my goal to work constructively with the governing body and fellow parents to help forward the success of our school.

Mr Matthew Francis

I am a Civil Servant with a background in mathematics and finance.  I am passionate about Awsworth Primary School providing high standards of education to all pupils.  I am married with two children, one who currently attends Awsworth Primary School.

Mrs Linda Stokes

I have been a Teaching Assistant at Awsworth Primary and Nursery School for 13 years. I support learning from Foundation through to Year 6  and come into contact with most pupils and parents/carers. Being a member of the Governing Body enables me to share an insight into school life and to help make decisions that are in the best interest of the children and for the school to evolve.

I enjoy running and play an active role in organising the Annual Awsworth 5k Fun Run.

Mr Ben Parker

Hello my name is Ben, parent to Gracie (7) and Mollie (3) whom both attend Awsworth Primary.  I work in finance and am a qualified children’s cricket coach and have always actively been involved with supporting the issues local to the village.  I like to be involved in formulating, implementing and evaluating proactive initiatives that serves the children of Awsworth and its surrounding areas to ensure the every child has the best start in life.  Furthermore from having children I want to get more involved with those areas that directly affect the lives of the little ones in Awsworth.  As a result simply being part of the Governing Body and offering my support, assistance and advice I feel I can ensure that all young children’s health, wellbeing and development is at the heart of every decision made within school and that all children have the best opportunities to maximise their individual potential.

Mrs Nicole Clarke

I am married with a 24 year old son. For the majority of my life I have been an Awsworth resident. I have been a school governor for a little over 17 years and have gathered a wealth of knowledge along the way.

Alongside being a Governor here at Awsworth I am also a proactive Governor of The Kimberley School. This works well as a link between Primary and Secondary education. At the Kimberley School I am the Chair of two committees, and my skill set generally lies within those areas, including pupil and staff welfare. At both schools I am the link for pupils with SEN, I have extensive knowledge of SEN due to working as a support for our SENCO, Mrs Standall, combined with knowledge of day-to-day life in school. I believe that all pupils should have the best opportunities to succeed, we continue to raise attainment and we retain and recruit excellent staff members.

Mrs Claire Watson

Staff Governor

I have been teaching in Awsworth since 1998 and have been part of the senior leadership team since the two schools amalgamated to form Awsworth Primary School in 2002. I am proud to work in a school which has such a positive, inclusive ethos and where the governing body work closely with the staff to ensure a rich learning experience.

I am married with one child, a daughter who attends Awsworth Primary School and is currently in Year One. Out of school I enjoy dancing, reading and spending time with family.
