Please read the information below which gives details of our Pupil Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

Awsworth Primary & Nursery School Pupil Premium Funding Review 2015-2016


The Pupil Premium is a source of Government funding, introduced in 2011, and is allocated to children from low-income families who are known to be eligible for free school meals (FSM), including those who have received free school meals at any point in the last six years, and children who are looked after continuously for a minimum of six months by the Local Authority.  Schools are accountable for the spending of the Pupil Premium but have the freedom to choose how to spend it in a way which they believe will have greatest impact on the attainment of those pupils for whom the funding is allocated.


Statistically, FSM data provides an indication of where deprivation is likely to be present, however, there is no assumption that all FSM children are behind in their learning nor that all children who find learning difficult will receive FSM.  Our intention is to use the funding in a variety of ways which will benefit specific individuals for whom funding is received and where possible to the benefit of other pupils with similar needs by providing small group activities.  In addition Pupil Premium funding will be used to provide children with a range of experiences that support their on-going development and social skills through enrichment activities eg school visits off-site and by inviting visitors into school to enhance the children’s learning.


Research indicates that there is a wide variety of strategies that schools can use to make the most effective use of their Pupil Premium funding.  We have identified and employ a range of strategies which we apply in our efforts to maximise pupil progress and has more recently included improving teachers’ feedback to pupils, helping children to focus on their learning through carefully targeted questions and support in 1-1 tuition sessions. 


PPG children have benefitted in many ways from the allocated funding.  These are not all measureable through progress and attainment data however, but they are equally important.  By focussing on well-being and pastoral support for those children who have identified barriers to learning they have been able to receive the support they need to fulfil their potential and develop the skills and attitude they need for future learning.

Year 1 Outcomes

There were five PPG children in the 2015 Year 1 cohort who completed the phonics screening check, 14% of the cohort.  Of these five pupils, 40% (2 pupils) were working at the expected standard compared to 63% (19 pupils) who have never been eligible for FSM.  The gap for the school is therefore 23% which is slightly higher than the Nottinghamshire gap of 20%.


End of KS1 Outcomes

There were four PPG children in the 2015 Year 2 cohort, 9% of the cohort of 43.  Of these four pupils, 50% (2 pupils) two have special needs.  One child achieved the expected standard in mathematics whilst all other outcomes were at level 2C or below.  Having previously been working below the expected level in the phonics screening check as a Year 1, one pupil succeeded in achieving the pass mark as a Year 2; the other three did not pass.


End of KS2 Outcomes

There were five PPG children in the 2015 Year 6 cohort who were eligible to take their end of KS2 tests, 21% of the cohort of 24.  Of these five pupils, one was absent during SATs week and one has special needs.  60% (3 pupils) achieved a level 4+ in Reading, Writing and Maths compared to 84% of pupils who have not been eligible for FSM6.  The FSM6 gap for Awsworth Primary School is therefore 24% which is higher than Nottinghamshire's FSM6 gap of 16%.  However, it needs to be noted that the absent child accounts for 20%. All five made two levels progress in at least one subject, reading, writing or maths, four made two levels progress in at least two of the subjects and three made two levels progress in all three subjects.  One of the pupils made more than two levels progress in reading and there were three level 5 outcomes.
